TRAVELING TIPS: Moving Abroad

Traveling Triplets

Depending on what type of person and packer you are, AND where you're going - you may decide to pack differently. I, however, have experience moving abroad for months at a time and widdling down my wardrobe to the essentials for stints of life on the road. I have found that I prefer backpacker style bags to suitcases, just because I spend a lot of time backpacking when I travel. If you are in one place the entire time, a suitcase might be best suit for your international adventure.

A few essentials: laptop, camera, toiletries/hygiene products, a carry-on duffle bag, and your purse/personal item. Packing can be very daunting, and it can be really difficult to really narrow down what you bring with you and what you'll actually need or use. If there's something you forget, chances are you can find it abroad. If you bring too much crap, chances are you're going to regret lugging it around with you - but then again, sometimes it's better safe than sorry! I'm a light traveler, and a minimalist - so if you're someone who has a hard time being decisive this can help. If you'd rather overpack than underpack, you might want to ask someone else :)

Must have: enough t-shirts, blouses, and tops for a week. A pair of good blue jeans, colored, and print - as well as a few pairs of shorts and skirts. Maxi skirts are great because they're comfortable and go with everything and are versatile for traveling. I always bring my favorite hat with me, but end up bringing 5 because I wear a lot of hats! Sunglasses are necessary, and be sure to remember a light and thicker jacket for weather. If you're going somewhere warm, you can decide otherwise - if you're going somewhere cooler or where the seasons vary, bring something for each.

Packing tip: roll your clothes, don't fold them! Creates a lot more space.

I have lived in China with 4 t-shirts, 1 pair of shorts and 1 pair of pants on my back and that was it. Oh, and a change of undies for 5 days. I had to do more laundry but I had very little to pack. I ended up buying clothes and items in China and bringing them home with me, with room to spare. I did the same thing when I lived in Peru and Ecuador, because I always, always, ALWAYS end up shopping in country and having fun loading up on local goodies. I'd rather have room to bring stuff home then have to buy a bunch more luggage to haul it all back - but that's just me :)

Good luck with your packing! Leave a comment below if you have any specific questions, and we'd love to help you. Don't dread it too much - once it's done, it's done! Ya just gotta get the motivation to dig in and get started.

Designer Orla Kiely Was Approved by Middleton on Dressing the Royal Baby

Yesterday, all eyes were on the doors of St. Mary’s hospital’s Lindo Wing, anxiously awaiting the first glimpse of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Cambridge. While everyone was over the moon excited to see what Kate Middleton would wear for her first appearance as a mom (so much so that Jenny Packham’s site crashed), another Middleton didn’t exactly escape unnoticed, Middleton’s mom and grand mom to the Prince! Carole caused a mini-frenzy when she stopped by the hospital to visit the new heir in a pretty Orla Kiely frock.
As chance would have it, we had plans to see Kiely at the launch of her iPhone and iPad accessory collection for Target that same day–and had to get the scoop on how the Irish designer felt about playing a small part on a very big day.
Clearly we didn't know [she was going to wear it,  Kiely said. “That was a surprise a good surprise. She looked great–you know she’s so elegant and slim and lovely.” In other words, she’s a lot like her daughter, Kate, whose also a fan of Kiely’s designs.
I was delighted,  Kiely said. “It was a big moment for her, her first grandchild so I was delighted she chose one of our dresses.
As for whether the Middleton-approved designer has plans to dress the Royal Baby, Kiely was coy. “Well you never know,” she said with a sly smile.
I think all the Royal Baby hubbub is very sweet, she continued. I bet Will and Kate will be very normal [parents]. I bet they’ll try to be as normal as possible.”
As for the Target collaboration, Kiely said it came about because, like everyone else on the planet, she’s “attached to her iPhone.” So, why not bring a little quirky flair to the accessory you carry most?
The collection includes a handful of iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 cases, an iPhone 5 wallet, and iPad and iPad mini cases, produced by tech accessory company Belkin, and done up in four of Kiely’s signature prints all the better for Instagram, an app the 49 year old designer is pretty fanatical about. “My favorite app is definitely Instagram. I’m a visual person.”
This is actually the second time Kiely has collaborated with Target in 2007, the two teamed up on a home collection. I really like Target, Kiely said of the decision to partner up with the retailer. They work with lots of designers and I think they always respect the designer’s brand and integrity, etc. I had a very good experience with them before so I wanted to do something with them again.

life with :: CYNTHIA VINCENT, an Entrepreneur with 10 years in the business and Politics of Partnerships

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Twelfth Street  by Cynthia Vicent. That’s some serious staying power in a very fickle industry.

To celebrate the occasion, we caught up with Vincent who is also credited as the original creative lead behind contemporary mega brand Vince in her Los Angeles showroom.

Vincent puts out a dizzying six collection a year. But she remains unfazed. “Luckily it doesn't stop,” she said.
Vincent can churn it out. She put together her first Twelfth Street collection in two short weeks, a time frame that would make even Project Runway contestants sweat.

[2003] I was planning to travel for a year, but Fern Mallis, who was then the director of 7th on Sixth, called me and said, ‘We’re doing Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we’re coming to LA and Mercedes-Benz wants to sponsor you.’ I said there’s no way I’m not doing this.” Vincent took her personal savings and in 14 days pulled together a collection for the runway. Twelfth Street was born.
Growing up in ’50s suburban LA as part of the self-professed ‘weird’ family in the neighborhood, Vincent describes her childhood as a “sort of cloudy, magical, fucked up upbringing.” “I always think of American Beauty,” Vincent said. It’s that rich, vivid and even imperfect setting that has helped define her point of view, earning her a cult following.
Upon the line’s 10th anniversary and a new partnership–Twelfth Street was acquired by The Gores Group in November 2012–Vincent is ready to reflect.

How did you get started designing?
My mom taught me how to sew and make patterns at the age of six–on an industrial machine that you would get you arrested now for child endangerment. We would go to the couture department at Buffums, which was the Neiman Marcus of the day, and pick out pieces. My sister would stand and watch outside the dressing room, and my mom would tell me to “hold it up honey”, and she would sit and draw the pattern and we would go home and try to make it.
You’re known for your sweaters, and have brought back a few favorites in your 10th anniversary collection. When you become known for something like that, is it a pain to know that you always have to do that?
It’s two-fold. It’s formulaic so it’s kind of easy. But then the challenge is, how do I make that new and interesting? I’m constantly running around the studio, “Do you love this? Even though you own this piece from seven years ago, would you buy this?” I’m the customer too, so if I’m not loving it, then how do I expect someone else to love it?
You began your business in third party retailers before launching e-commerce and now flagship boutiques. Do you see a difference in what will sell in each?
It’s very different, the pieces that our buyers would gravitate to will be completely different from the best sellers at our retail store. At the retail level, the buyers come with an idea of who I am. In the retail store and online we can express things more. It’s very interesting to see how the broader audience accepts more from me.
Do you have more retail stores planned?
We’d love to do more. L.A. is an interesting place–it has to really be the right location. That’s been challenging, but we’re constantly looking. E-commerce is also a largely untapped market for us. International is also hugely important, because we see a lot of international traffic on the website and in our retail store. 25 to 30 percent of our sales are international England, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, and the Middle East. They've just found us organically.
You’re now on your 10th Anniversary with Cynthia Vincent, but your first company was actually Vince. What was behind your decision to leave and start fresh?
They’re very different brands. When we started Vince everyone said we were the dream team. Me as the designer, this manufacturer, this sales team, this merchandiser. Incredible, right? But I quickly understood that wasn’t for me. It’s an amazing business but it was not about just bottom-line and money for me. At the end I need my autonomy. I’m an entrepreneur at heart and I need to have my creative outlet and my vision understood. So who better than me, right?
Do you feel it’s important for the creative head to be involved in the day-to-day decisions?
I do. There was a model we worked with before, where I was sort of separate from some decisions and it clearly wasn't working. In terms of cohesion of the line it needs to have a point of view and the DNA needs to be throughout.
In November Cynthia Vincent was acquired by The Gores Group. How is that changing things?
There was a lot we hadn't really capitalized on in the old partnership. When people aren't seeing eye to eye you can’t move forward. Now I actually have people in senior positions taking charge of e-commerce, retail, marketing… I have a president who understands product and is running it, so I can take a step back from all that stuff and just be creative.
What was that acquisition process like?
They did so much research and due diligence before actually investing that it prompted me to look back at the last 10-year history. That’s actually how the anniversary collection came about. They also interviewed my buyers and customers. It’s kind of scary when someone tells you they want to interview this store, this director, this president. You don’t know what they’re going to say, but it was incredibly positive. Hearing these stories of how I’ve been through their lives with this or that garment, it was really thrilling and energizing. I’ve been so entrenched in the business, and kind of fighting, that I didn't ever stick my head up and go, “wait a minute, we’ve built something really amazing here.”
What kinds of things came up that surprised you?
That they saw consistency, that there’s a strong point of view, and that it continued to be a very important brand. When you’re doing it you’re not always sure. You always want to grow the business or want it faster. There’s always this whole, “Are you doing the right thing?” There was a lot of questioning in the past so it always put me on this path of just keep doing it, keep doing it, keep doing it. It was nice to stop spinning for a moment and be able to reflect and think about where we want to take this.
And where do you want to take it?
I want to do a lot of things. I want to bring back the shoes to where they once were. There were some inconsistencies in production, and it’s just such a crowded market now. Being able to bring back the product is a bigger challenge but I’m up for it. Also adding more categories and collaborations, possibly a swim or cabana collection. I’ve been asked so many times by buyers and customers but there has always been resistance on my part. I would love to do jewelry. And I would love to do more retail. Interior design, home accessories, textiles… This is me [gestures to her showroom], I love interiors.

You’ve learned a lot about chemistry of partnerships. What words of advice would you give to someone in the creative field on that?
Make sure you’re involved in all aspects but really have a great team behind you. If I were to change anything, it would be to not separate myself from the bigger picture. You don’t need to do the day-to-day business but you need to know what’s going on. You need to have your decisions, your point of view, and people who believe in you.
The term authenticity comes to mind…
That’s been a word I’ve been really embracing, to show my authenticity. I think I’ve held back a lot, maybe done what I’ve thought people wanted versus what I really believed in.

Michael Jackson's mother says he denied prescription drug problem

Katherine Jackson, 83, said under cross-examination that she and her family had heard rumors that the singer was abusing pain medications but never saw him under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the final years of his life.

        Katherine Jackson

The mother of Michael Jackson testified on Monday in her wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live that the late pop star denied he was abusing prescription drugs when she confronted him in the years before his death.
Katherine Jackson, 83, said under cross-examination that she and her family had heard rumors that the singer was abusing pain medications but never saw him under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the final years of his life.
"I told him I heard that he was using prescription drugs," the Jackson family matriarch told jurors in her second day on the stand in the trial in which she and Jackson's children are suing AEG Live over the singer's death. AEG has argued that Jackson had prescription drug and addiction problems for years before entering into any agreement with the company. The King of Pop died at age 50 in June 2009 in Los Angeles from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol while preparing for his "This Is It" series of comeback shows in London. The lawsuit alleges that privately held AEG Live hired Dr Conrad Murray as his personal physician. Murray was caring for the singer as he rehearsed for the shows and the doctor was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for administering the propofol that killed Jackson.

Katherine Jackson, dressed in a purple and white coat and a dark pink top, said she confronted her son about the rumors at his Las Vegas residence, where he lived from 2006 to 2008. She did not say exactly when she brought up her concerns. "He didn't want me to worry," Jackson said when questioned by AEG Live attorney Marvin Putnam about whether she knew he would deny the rumors. "He's my son," she added.
"I didn't think it was that serious. When a child respects his mother and doesn't want her to think it's that bad, he'll deny it."

Katherine Jackson, who said that was the only time she confronted her son about drugs on her own, acknowledged that she knew her famous son was taking prescription medication for head and back pains but said she did not believe he was abusing them. Jackson's mother, who grew frustrated at times with Putnam's questioning, said that she and her children together asked the singer about his rumored addictions in 2002, believing that her presence would have a stronger impact on him.
"We just saw that he was OK and he was upset," she said of the family's intervention. "So we didn't talk about it. ... There was no deep discussion." Katherine Jackson on Friday testified that AEG Live failed to get her son proper medical attention when he fell ill while preparing for his comeback tour. AEG Live has said it did not hire or supervise Murray and could not have foreseen that Murray posed a danger to Jackson.

Katherine Jackson, the plaintiff's final witness, also testified that she dropped her $100 million restitution claim against Murray because the doctor had many children. "I felt his (Murray's) children needed it," she added. Michael's oldest son, Prince, 16, has already testified.
The younger children Paris, 15, and 11-year-old Prince Michael II, also known as Blanket, were not expected to testify. Michael's nephews T.J. and Taj Jackson, sons of brother Tito Jackson, have also testified. The trial, which started in April and was supposed to last three months, is expected to conclude in September.

WORLD AWAITS GLIMPSE OF A ROYAL BABY

The world is eagerly awaiting the first glimpse of the royal baby born to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who "could not be happier" at becoming parents.
William and Kate spent the night at hospital bonding with their new son who was delivered at 4.24pm yesterday weighing 8lb 6oz.
The Duke was at the Duchess's bedside when she gave birth at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London.
The royal couple could leave hospital on Tuesday with their son and show the baby prince to the world's waiting media and well-wishers.

The Prince of Wales, who has become a grandfather for the first time, summed up the feelings of the Royal Family when he described the new arrival as an "incredibly special moment for William and Catherine".
William telephoned his family to tell them the good news, speaking personally to the Queen, his father Charles and younger brother Prince Harry. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are delighted at the news."
The new royal baby is third in line to the throne. He will be the 43rd sovereign since William the Conqueror if, as expected, he follows reigns by Charles then William.
The Prince of Wales issued a brief statement on Monday night saying: "Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy. Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."
Moments before Charles's joyous words were released, the Queen's press secretary Ailsa Anderson strode out on to Buckingham Palace's forecourt to place the official notice on its ornate stand. The document had four signatures, first of which was Marcus Setchell, surgeon gynaecologist to the Queen, who led the medical team that delivered Kate's baby.
Mr Setchell spoke movingly about the baby, describing the Queen's third great-grandchild as a "wonderful baby, beautiful baby".

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: Stella Jean

STELLA JEAN Runs the Week

Stella Jean is a young Italian Haitian designer, born and working in Rome. Jean grew up in a multicultural family, where art, fashion and beauty were part of her daily life. Inspired by her elegant Haitian mother, her father is a Turin artist, who designs and creates high-end jewelry.

Working first as a model for Egon Von Fürstenberg, Jean soon discovered her creative calling, and has been creating her own designs since July 2011, when she won the Who’s On Next contest. Debuting her own collection during Milan’s Fashion Week, Jean produced a sophisticated show in collaboration with the cutting edge fashion trade show – White, in the beautiful location of the Rotonda della Besana, Milan.

Stella Jean’s individualistic style is métissage, which translates to crossbred, and echoes and evokes her personal story, inspired as it is by her own multiculturalism. Her refined collection of African waxed cotton prints evokes a retro fifties chic, men’s shirt fabric and expressed through an impeccable European cut.

Her collection of “Wax and Stripe” designs, are based around contrasts, through the reinterpretation of traditional men’s shirts, and melting the spaces between cultures. There is a Prada-esque level of sophisticated styling, combined with a wonderfully romantic retrospective of Africa in the 40’s and 50’s, reminiscent of the work of Mali photographer, Seydou Keita.

Stella Jean’s expression of multicultural design is produced through the ITC, the Ethical Fashion Initiative, and in collaborating with the International Trade Center, a joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. The Ethical Fashion Initiative focus is to create beautiful luxury handwork produced ethically by disadvantaged communities in Africa. The ITC programme generates work by creating an infrastructure where the luxury fashion industry can develop and produce products. It is about proper accountability, sustainability and environmentally sound production, they promote sustainable economic development and opportunity.

Stella Jean produces a women’s, a men’s, and a swimwear collection. Her work has been featured by the international press, and is sold around the world.

Perfect Outfit: A Casual Weekend Look That'll Last Through Fall

By , Photographed by

When we spy The Perfect Outfit, two things happen: We feel a tiny hint of envy, and we take copious mental notes on how to recreate it. Enter Carly Phillips, the D.C. manager for menswear brand Michael Andrews Bespoke. Her adorable, made-for-the-weekend ensemble struck us as equally cool, comfy, and casual, and we couldn't wait to give it a try. Plus, it's perfect for the not-so-scorching days ahead — they're on the horizon, we promise!

To recreate Phillips' spot-on style, we opted for coated denim, a silk shirt in a bold hue, and a classic jean jacket (optional, if it's really sticky out). Some cat-eye sunnies, a stone bangle, and the perfect pair of silver oxfords complete the look.

KANYE WEST SCUFFLE WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER OUTSIDE THE LAX AIRPORT.

Kanye West is now a felony suspect in an attempted robbery investigation, it has been reported.
The 'I Am a God' rapper attacked a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport.
Kanye was snapped punching the man while simultaneously attempting to remove the camera from the photographer's grip.
According to TMZ law enforcement officials in the Los Angeles Robbery Homicide Unit  "are currently putting a file together" on the matter and have named Kanye as the prime suspect.
The case will then be sent on to the Los Angeles County District Attorney where prosecutors will decide whether to move forward with charges.
The injured photographer was taken to hospital following the incident and his physical condition is unknown at this time.
X17 Online reports Kanye "grabbed the man by the shoulders, punched him and tried to wrestle the camera from his hands" after the lensman repeatedly asked him questions. Apparently the vicious attack led to the musician jamming "his foot on the photographer's face".
Immediately after the beating Kanye left in a car with his bodyguard.

Authorities arrived on the scene soon after with the rapper nowhere to be found.

Kanye became a father for the first time last month when his girlfriend Kim Kardashian gave birth to their daughter North West.
Kanye's alleged assault on the photographer can potentially throw wrenches in his plans for a world tour this year following the June release of his sixth studio album Yeezus.
Should he be charged with the felony Kanye would face a host of legal woes and delays.
Kanye has a history of clashing with photographers and exploded on a paparazzo as recently as last week.
"I appreciate it, but don't talk. Don't talk to me," he responded angrily to a Photographer man questions at the time.
"I don't want to hear paparazzi talk to me or anyone I know. And tell everybody never talk, to anyone, that anyone knows - don't talk to themselves. Don't talk ever again."
Kanye welcomed his first child with reality star Kim Kardashian, daughter North West, on June 15.
