STELLA JEAN Runs the Week

Stella Jean is a young Italian Haitian designer, born and working in Rome. Jean grew up in a multicultural family, where art, fashion and beauty were part of her daily life. Inspired by her elegant Haitian mother, her father is a Turin artist, who designs and creates high-end jewelry.

Working first as a model for Egon Von Fürstenberg, Jean soon discovered her creative calling, and has been creating her own designs since July 2011, when she won the Who’s On Next contest. Debuting her own collection during Milan’s Fashion Week, Jean produced a sophisticated show in collaboration with the cutting edge fashion trade show – White, in the beautiful location of the Rotonda della Besana, Milan.

Stella Jean’s individualistic style is métissage, which translates to crossbred, and echoes and evokes her personal story, inspired as it is by her own multiculturalism. Her refined collection of African waxed cotton prints evokes a retro fifties chic, men’s shirt fabric and expressed through an impeccable European cut.

Her collection of “Wax and Stripe” designs, are based around contrasts, through the reinterpretation of traditional men’s shirts, and melting the spaces between cultures. There is a Prada-esque level of sophisticated styling, combined with a wonderfully romantic retrospective of Africa in the 40’s and 50’s, reminiscent of the work of Mali photographer, Seydou Keita.

Stella Jean’s expression of multicultural design is produced through the ITC, the Ethical Fashion Initiative, and in collaborating with the International Trade Center, a joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. The Ethical Fashion Initiative focus is to create beautiful luxury handwork produced ethically by disadvantaged communities in Africa. The ITC programme generates work by creating an infrastructure where the luxury fashion industry can develop and produce products. It is about proper accountability, sustainability and environmentally sound production, they promote sustainable economic development and opportunity.

Stella Jean produces a women’s, a men’s, and a swimwear collection. Her work has been featured by the international press, and is sold around the world.
